Waltons of Yorkshire: a brief history

One of the oldest, if not the oldest linen manufacturing firms in this country is that of Walton and Co., Limited, manufacturers of household lines, who have works at Castle Mills, Knaresborough, Yorkshire.

The firm commenced business in 1785 under the title of Walton, Oates and Co. It has a history which is full of interest, since it goes back to early days of employment of hand-loom weavers of the old type.

In the beginning the firm provided weft and warp to hundreds of hand-loom workers in cottages for miles around. It is interesting to note that the firm have in their possession an unbleached linen shirt made in 1850, the whole of which was woven complete on a hand loom. There is not a seam in the shirt, the neck band and wrist bands being woven in. This shirt was exhibited at the Great London Exhibition held in 1851, the firm being highly commended for household linens and awarded a medal and certificate signed by Prince Albert.

Methods of distribution were very different in those days. The roads were more suitable for pack horses than for vehicles, and for this reason drapers used to come to the mills, select the goods which they desired, and carry then away in creels or panniers on their pack horses.

Today Messrs. Walton and Co., Limited, specialise mainly on the “Knaresboro” household lines, which have through the trade been supplied to the Royal Palaces, the towelling bearing the names “Marlborough House”, “York Cottage” and “Sandringham”. The goods have a fine reputation for quality and durability. Recently the factory at Castle Mills has undergone considerable repairs, and with the employment of workers whose tradition of linen quality is an inherited instinct, the firm are in a position to well maintain the reputation they have held since the very start of the British linen industry.
